Slices of fudge-like turf are cut from the bog by hand with a thin shovel called a slain. As water drains from these sods, they are stacked for final drying and eventually carried off the bog and used for fuel. You can feel vibrations when the heavy bags of turf are dropped onto the edge of the bog hundreds of feet away.
