Online Gelatin Emulsion Making Workshop
Silver bromide gelatin emulsions are the hottest “new” alternative photographic process and they’re a true alternative to factory made films and printing papers.
In this basic workshop viewers will see Mark Osterman demonstrate every step in making a sensitive gelatin emulsion from mixing the dry gelatin and chemicals, suspending the silver halide, washing the emulsion and finally coating a glass plate that could be used in any 4x5” view camera.
The basic emulsion is slow (ISO 1-3) and only sensitive to blue and violet light but very high resolution and a perfect way to get into emulsion making. Advanced techniques include increasing speed and spectral sensitivity, but clean basic emulsion making is essential. Since first publishing this formula in 2012 many continue to use it as their primary formula for portraits and landscapes.
The 2 hour demonstration will be performed in daylight to give viewers an excellent opportunity to see the various operations that would normally be done under safe light conditions. Participants will receive an electronic file with the full instructions and MO-1880 formula written by Osterman, originally published in Christopher James’ Book of Alternative Photographic Processes.
